One of the most controversial debates is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist. These two terms almost tend to confuse everyone all the time and people almost assume they refer to the same type of medical specialists. The answer is that these are two totally different words referring to two different types of doctors. It is true that these two specialize in human behavior, but they are also purely different.

Simply, a psychiatrist is a specialized medical doctor who has specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of people with medical conditions and illnesses.

To attain the recognition of a psychologist, one has to first pursue a Ph.D. in clinical counseling or counseling psychology. Remember that this is a very high level of education and most doctorate programs take up to seven years to complete. After this, the student is sent to a yearlong of internship to give them experience and get the license. This is done together with intense supervision and assessment.

It is only after this that someone can be referred to as a psychologist and is allowed to practice.

Only psychiatrists have the authority to prescribe any medication to a patient with a mental illness. Other therapists and counselors can only be involved in practices that may help ease the condition but not with medication issues at all. Remember that a psychiatrist is a specialized person with intense training in this field.

There are two common types of psychiatrists; forensic and pediatric psychiatrists.

A pediatric psychiatrist can also be referred to as a child psychiatrist. After completing their general study in medicine, these specialists focus on the care of children and the psychological conditions that revolve around them.

They help detect mental disorders and conditions that arise as the children grown. There are many things that are detected in early childhood like retardation.

As the children grow, these doctors are directly involved in their life's and they help them develop both mentally and psychologically.

Forensic psychiatrists can also be termed as forensic psychologists and their work revolves around working with legal cases that involve people with mental issues. They are not only knowledgeable in the health systems but also in the legalities involved with convicting a mentally retarded person. While it may be hard at some times to tell whether a crime was committed by an insane or sane person, it is their work to intervene and remove the doubt. They are involved in the testing of the mental condition of a person and at sometimes in the rehabilitation and recovery.

Remember that a USA psychiatrist can take up many roles and can perform the work of a counselor or therapist. They are trained to be widely knowledgeable and thus can adequately perform these tasks, they are skilled enough also to handle most mental cases. This includes small issues like mild stress to intense depression cases and madness. Patients are advised to work closely with psychiatrists to help attain good mental health.

Apart from working in hospitals and clinics, psychiatrists can also work in research institutions and other related organizations. They roles are not limited neither are their skills.
